My 5 year old taught me a little about mindset this summer during a long hike.
“Daddy, my feet hurt”
One mile in, hot and lost…this was not good. A rest and a snack bought us 10 more mins of motivation then…
“Daddy, I’m tired”
After a few more tricks and another mile down the trail.
“Daddy, can we go back? this hill is too big”
She was right, we were facing a monsterous ascent.
“Hmm”, I said, “let’s count steps until we get to the top, I’ll start. 1…2…3”
We got to the top in 80 steps.
“Let’s keep counting daddy! 81…82…83”
Up and down hills, we counted. We went another 30 mins with no complaints.
I looked at Coach Tina, who was toting our 3 month old in a carrier…she gave a motion to keep going. We were ALL tired, hot and mosquito bitten, but she kept counting.
“325…326…327”
When we were near the end, we said “500!” together.
“Daddy, that’s the highest I’ve ever counted!”
We looked at the map and we’d covered more than 5 miles and 16k steps.
Not bad for a 5 year old who wanted to quit 10 mins in.
The lesson?
Your body is a LOT more capable than your mind thinks it is.
Almost every workout has a point like this…you have to focus on one rep, one step, one breath at a time.
If you listen to your legs when they get tired, your lungs when they start to pump, or your arms when the push ups get you, you don’t get to experience the thrill of accomplishing anything.
Once you realize your mindset controls everything, you become unstoppable.
